Leadership for Social Change

Mapping Out Practices and Challenges of Leadership Development Initiatives Towards Building a Community of Practice

24-25 June 2010, Asian Institute of Management, Makati

CALL FOR PAPERS

Rationale

Filipinos face the compelling need for social change. There is growing concern that the Philippines will not be able to meet the Millennium Development Goals’ indicators by 2015, or worse, that development indicators have worsened through the years. The societal divides in the country are complex, and the presence of effective leadership is crucial to achieve significant social change. The May 2010 elections will give way to a new set of leaders, and their campaign promises are to be tested. And though the challenge of leadership is often posed to elected officials, effective leadership, increasingly, involves engaging different groups to come together for genuine dialogue and active civic participation, in order for social change to begin to come about.

Looking at effective leadership demands critical assessment and discussion on how leadership development interventions lead to better societal outcomes. Academic, corporate, public, and non-government sectors have undertaken leadership development, yet the question remains of how these contribute to social change. To answer this concern, reflection and dialogue among leadership practitioners must be undertaken.

It is in this context that the Asian Institute of Management TeaM Energy Center has initiated the “Leadership for Social Change: Mapping Out Practices and Challenges of Leadership Development Initiatives Towards Building a Community of Practice” Conference.  The Conference aims to bring together institutions and individuals that are involved in the leadership development field in the Philippines today.  The Conference will give its participants the opportunity to reflect on their leadership development interventions and engage in dialogue with other practitioners in the field to explore various leadership development approaches and practices being provided to leaders interested in social change as well as to discuss the issues that these leaders are facing that leadership development programs can respond to.

In doing so, the Conference will also function as a venue for assessment, research and innovation, where participants can share insights on each others’ practices, gain a better sense of the state of leadership development in the Philippines, and begin considering possible improvements to their own programs and practices.

Furthermore, the Conference will be the start of a community of practice of leadership advocates and practitioners who will continue talking about and taking concrete steps to further develop leadership in the country. Potential funders, international and local, will also be invited to join in the discussions and network with the leadership development organizations present in the Conference.

The Conference will be held on June 24-25, 2010, in the Asian Institute of Management, Makati.
